Zola's 2026 data puts the average wedding gift at about $130, with most guests spending between $100 and $150. Its relationship-based guidance runs from about $75 to $100 for a coworker or distant relative, $100 to $150 for a friend or relative, and $150 to $200 or more for a close friend, immediate family member or someone in the wedding party. A guest bringing a plus-one typically gives somewhat more.
The Knot's guest study puts the average gift nearer $150 and the total cost of attending (travel, lodging, attire and gift) at roughly $610, so it is worth remembering what a wedding costs your guests when you choose the date and location.
The Knot's 2026 registry study found 82 percent of engaged couples register, three quarters include cash funds, and 41 percent say cash is the gift they want most. Zola reports that 87 percent of couples have or plan a cash fund.
If you want cash, say so plainly on your wedding website and let guests find it there. If you are the guest, mailing a check before the wedding, rather than handing it over on the day, is the simplest way to keep it from getting lost.
Emily Post's guidance is that married, engaged and long-term partners are invited together. The names on the envelope signal who is invited, so avoid printing a line such as 'no children' on the invitation, and if children are not invited, tell out-of-town guests early so they can arrange care.
Ask guests to reply about three to four weeks before the wedding, and chase the stragglers politely. Your caterer will want final numbers soon after.
Dress codes can be confusing, so say what you mean on the invitation or the website. Black tie means floor-length gowns or very dressy cocktail dresses and tuxedos. Cocktail or semi-formal allows flexible hemlines and colors. Beach and resort weddings suit flowing dresses and lighter fabrics, and a festive code invites sparkle.
As a guest, avoid white, ivory or anything close to the bride's dress, and check the venue: grass, sand and stone floors all affect shoes.
Emily Post's rehearsal dinner guest list is the wedding party and their partners, the officiant and partner, both sets of parents, grandparents, siblings not in the party, and the parents of young attendants. If you invite only some out-of-town guests, draw a clear line, such as all family or all out-of-town guests, so nobody feels singled out.
Anyone invited to a bridal shower should also be invited to the wedding, with the exception of an office shower, and an engaged couple should not host their own. The best man and groomsmen usually organize and pay for the bachelor party.
For a destination wedding, give guests plenty of notice, send save-the-dates early and be realistic about what the trip costs them. Zola's guidance is that attending is a gift in itself, though a present is still gracious.
Emily Post suggests writing thank-you notes within three months of the wedding or the gift, thanking vendors within about two weeks, and writing to guests who came without a gift too.
